Chirag meaning
Chirag (चिराग) is a Hindu boy's name of Persian origin (Hindi and Gujarati usage).
A lamp, a light
Chirag (चिराग) is not Sanskrit but Persian: chirāgh, "a lamp", which came into Hindi and Urdu as charāg or chirāg. Platts's Dictionary of Urdu, Classical Hindi and English marks the word as Persian and gives it as a lamp or light, with a cluster of compounds for wicks, lamp-stands and the lighting of lamps at dusk. Although the word itself is Persian, it has long been part of everyday Hindi, which is how it came to be used as a boy's name. The fourteenth-century Delhi Sufi Nasiruddin Mahmud was known as Chiragh-e-Dehli, "the lamp of Delhi", and the Delhi neighbourhood of Chirag Delhi grew up around his shrine. Name lists give Chirag as "lamp" or "light", matching the dictionary.
