Elowyn is a modern spelling of Elowen, a name linked with Cornwall in south-west England. It is usually explained from the Cornish word elow, which the Cornish Language Academy glosses as "elm trees" and which appears in Cornish place names such as Pryskelow and Trevelow. Name lists give Elowen as "elm tree", but we could not find either Elowen or Elowyn recorded as a traditional name, so we treat it as a modern choice built on that word. It has a soft, flowing sound, like the nature names many Indian parents like, and it is said el-OH-win.
