Gurmeet meaning
Gurmeet (ਗੁਰਮੀਤ) is a Sikh unisex name of Punjabi origin, used for both girls and boys.
Friend of the Guru; the Guru as friend
Gurmeet (ਗੁਰਮੀਤ) joins gur, the Guru, with mīt, "friend", which the Mahan Kosh derives from Sanskrit mitra. Besides "friend", the Mahan Kosh gives mīt a second sense: the Creator, the Lord of the world who does good to all. In the Guru Granth Sahib Guru Ram Das addresses the Guru himself as a friend, in the words mere mīt gurdev, "my friend, the divine Guru", at Ang 10, in the evening prayer So Purakh. So the name can be read either as "friend of the Guru" or as "the Guru who is a friend". Baby-name lists give "friend of the Guru", which matches the sources. It is also spelt Gurmit and is used for both boys and girls.
