Gurpreet meaning
Gurpreet (ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ) is a Sikh unisex name of Punjabi origin, used for both girls and boys.
Love for the Guru
Gurpreet (ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ) joins gur, the Guru, a teacher who dispels the darkness of ignorance, with prīt, from Sanskrit prīti, "love". Unlike many modern Sikh compound names, this pairing occurs in the Guru Granth Sahib itself: the phrase gur prīti, love for the Guru, appears in Guru Nanak's hymn at Ang 60 and in Guru Ram Das's at Ang 572. So the name means "love for the Guru" or "one who loves the Guru", which is also how baby-name lists render it. Gurpreet is given to both boys and girls, with Singh or Kaur showing which, and it follows the same pattern as Harpreet and Dilpreet. It is also spelt Gurprit.
