The river Kaveri of South India
Kaveri (ಕಾವೇರಿ) is the name of the great river that rises at Talakaveri in the Kodagu hills of Karnataka and flows through Tamil Nadu to the Bay of Bengal. Monier-Williams cites it from the Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa and records a legend that the river was once Kāverī, daughter of King Yuvanāśva, turned by her father's curse from half of the Ganga into this river, so that she is also called Ardha-gaṅgā, "half Ganga". The river is revered as a goddess, especially in Kodagu. Kaveri is a girls' name used mainly in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, where it is also spelled Cauvery.
