Machhindra meaning
Machhindra (मच्छिंद्र) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin (Marathi usage).
Matsyendra, 'lord of fish', a teacher of Yoga
Also used to mean: matsyendranath
Machhindra (मच्छिंद्र) is the Marathi spoken form of Sanskrit Matsyendra, "lord of the fish", from matsya, "fish", and indra, "chief". Monier-Williams records Matsyendra as a teacher of Yoga. He is Matsyendranath or Machhindranath, honoured as the first of the Nath gurus and the teacher of Gorakhnath; legend says he heard Shiva teaching yoga to Parvati while hidden in the belly of a fish. The Nath tradition is strong in Maharashtra, where Machhindranath is counted among the Navnath, the nine Naths, and the name is still given in rural families.
