Naksh (नक्ष) is a short modern name whose meaning depends on where you look. The Hindustani word naqsh, which came into Hindi and Urdu from Persian, is well recorded: Platts gives it as painting and design, a picture, carving or engraving, and an impression or mark. Indian name lists, however, mostly give Naksh as "moon" or "star". We could not find a Sanskrit word naksha with that sense; Sanskrit has only the verb nakṣ, "to approach, to attain". The star sense may come from reading Naksh as a short form of nakshatra, but we cannot confirm that.
