Roshan (रोशन) is the Persian word roshan, which Steingass gives as light, splendid, luminous, bright and resplendent, and also clear, evident and illustrious. It came into Hindi and Urdu with the same meaning, so roshan karna is "to light up" and roshni is "light". Name lists agree on "light" or "bright". In India the name is used by Hindu, Muslim and Christian families alike, and it is also a family name, as with the film-making Roshan family. A well-known bearer is the actor Roshan Seth.
