Neel meaning
Neel (नील) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, नी, it is a Vrishchik rashi name (Anuradha nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Dark-coloured, especially dark blue; a sapphire
Neel (नील) is Sanskrit nīla, a colour word Monier-Williams traces to the Rig Veda for anything dark, especially dark blue, dark green or black, and also for cloth dyed with indigo. As a noun it can mean the sapphire. The word carries famous names as well: in the Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata, Nīla is one of the monkey chiefs in Rāma's army, said to be a son of Agni, the fire god, and in Purāṇic geography Nīla is the blue mountain north of Ilāvṛta. The compound Nīlakaṇṭha, "blue-throated", is a name of Shiva. Name lists give Neel simply as "blue", in line with the dictionary.
