Nithilan (நித்திலன்) is a modern Tamil boy's name. Its form points to nittilam, a literary word for a pearl, which the Tamil Lexicon records with a quotation from the Cilappatikāram, plus the masculine ending -an; the girl's name Nithila comes from the same word. Some name lists give Nithilan as "eternal" or "everlasting", perhaps by association with Sanskrit nitya, but we found no dictionary support for that sense. The best-known bearer is Nithilan Saminathan, the Tamil film director of Maharaja (2024).
