Pushkaraj (पुष्कराज) is a Marathi name with a double life. In the dictionaries it is a gemstone: Molesworth's Marathi dictionary gives puṣkarāja as a topaz, explaining it as a slip for Sanskrit puṣparāga, "flower-coloured", which Monier-Williams glosses as topaz; Hindi has the same gem as pukhraj. Name lists, however, read it as puṣkara, "lotus", plus rāja, "king", and give "king of lotuses". That reading is natural but is not how the dictionaries record the word. Marathi actor Pushkaraj Chirputkar is a well-known bearer.
