Saumitra meaning
Saumitra (सौमित्र) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin.
Son of Sumitrā, a name of Lakṣmaṇa; friendship
Also used to mean: son of sumitra, lakshmana, good friend
Saumitra (सौमित्र) is a Sanskrit metronymic, "son of Sumitrā", and Monier-Williams records it as a name of Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma's devoted brother in the Rāmāyaṇa, whose mother was Queen Sumitrā; his twin Śatrughna was also her son. As a neuter noun the same word means friendship, from sumitra, "a good friend", and it also names certain Vedic chants. Name lists give "son of Sumitra" or "Lakshmana", and some "good friend". In Bengal the name is spelled Soumitra, as with the actor Soumitra Chatterjee.
