Sohini (সোহিনী, often said Shohini) is, in the dictionaries, the name of a raga. The Samsad Bengali–English Dictionary defines it simply as an Indian musical mode, and Sohini is a well-known raga of Hindustani classical music, related to Marwa. On name lists the name is usually explained as "beautiful" or "pleasant". We could not find that sense recorded for Sohini itself, though Hindi does have a similar-sounding adjective, sohan or sohnā, meaning beautiful or charming, from Sanskrit śobhana. So the safest reading is a musical name, with "beautiful" as the meaning many families now give it. It is a girls' name used mainly in Bengal.
