Sukhman (ਸੁਖਮਨ) appears in the Guru Granth Sahib as the name of the sushumna, the central channel of the subtle body in yoga, lying between ida on the left and pingala on the right. Kabir uses it on Ang 327 and 334, and Guru Arjan on Ang 612. Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha's Mahan Kosh traces the word to Sanskrit suṣumnā and records the yogis' teaching that breath drawn through this channel brings the unstruck sound and bliss. Punjabi name lists today read the name as sukh, "peace", plus man, "mind", giving "peaceful mind". Each part is a real Punjabi word, but the word in scripture is the yogic term, so the popular reading is a modern one. The name is given to both boys and girls.
