Tabrez (تبریز) is the Urdu pronunciation of Tabriz, the old city of Iranian Azerbaijan. Steingass enters tabrīz as the capital of Azerbaijan, and tabrīzī as "of Tabriz". In India the name comes from Shams Tabrizi, "Shams of Tabriz", the dervish whose friendship with Rumi is celebrated in Persian poetry, and families often pair the two words, as in Shams Tabrez. A few name lists give "manifestation", perhaps from an unrelated Arabic word tabrīz, "bringing forth, displaying", which Steingass lists separately; the name itself is the city.
