Upama meaning
Upama (उपमा) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, उ, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Comparison, likeness, similarity; a simile
Upama (उपमा) is Sanskrit upamā, from the verb upa-mā, "to measure one thing against another, to compare". Monier-Williams gives "comparison, resemblance, equality, similarity", "a likeness or picture", and, in poetics, "a simile", noting that a full simile needs four parts: the thing compared, what it is compared to, the shared quality and the word of comparison. Upamā is one of the basic figures of speech in Sanskrit literary theory. Name lists give Upama as "comparison" or "simile", which matches the dictionary. It is a different name from Anupama, "without compare".
