Kalavati (कलावती) is made from Sanskrit kalā and the suffix -vatī, "having". Kalā has two main senses in Monier-Williams: any fine or practical art, of which sixty-four are traditionally counted, and a digit, one-sixteenth of the moon. The masculine kalā-vat is a name for the moon, while kalāvatī is recorded as the name of an Apsaras and of several women in the story collection Kathāsaritsāgara, the lute of the Gandharva Tumburu, and a musical mode. Name lists read it as "skilled in the arts", a fair reading of its parts.
