Malavika (मालविका) is best known as the heroine of Kālidāsa's Sanskrit play Mālavikāgnimitram, in which King Agnimitra falls in love with the gifted dancer Mālavikā. Monier-Williams records mālavikā as the name of that heroine and also as a medicinal plant, Ipomoea turpethum. The form of the word suggests a link with Mālava, the Malwa region of central India, which is why name lists give "princess of Malwa"; the dictionary does not state that sense directly, so we show it as a popular meaning. The name is used in Kerala, and Malvika is the North Indian spelling.
