Jhanvi meaning
Jhanvi (जाह्नवी) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, जा, it is a Makar rashi name (Uttara Ashadha nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Daughter of Jahnu: the river Ganga
Jhanvi is a respelling of Jahnavi (जाह्नवी), Sanskrit jāhnavī, 'daughter of Jahnu', a name of the river Gaṅgā. Monier-Williams tells the story behind it. When King Bhagīratha's austerities brought the Ganges down from heaven, the river flooded the sacrificial ground of the sage-king Jahnu, who drank up its waters. At Bhagīratha's prayer he released them again through his ears, and so the river came to be regarded as his daughter. The name therefore honours the Ganga through one of its most vivid legends. Jahnavi, Janhvi and Jahnvi are all spellings of the same name; the dictionary form keeps the h before the n.
