Ganga meaning
Ganga (गंगा) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin.
The river Ganges, 'swift-goer'; the river as a goddess
Ganga (गंगा) is the Sanskrit name of the river Ganges, which Monier-Williams explains as "swift-goer", from gam, "to go". The dictionary records the river as a goddess with a long story: the eldest daughter of the mountain Himavat and Menā, brought down from heaven to earth by King Bhagīratha, and, in the Mahabharata, the wife of King Śāntanu and mother of Bhishma. Hindus regard the river as sacred and purifying. Ganga is given as a girls' name across India, on its own and in longer names such as Gangadevi.
