Urmila (उर्मिला) is the name of a much-loved figure of the Rāmāyaṇa: the daughter of King Janaka and Queen Sunayanā, younger sister of Sītā, and wife of Lakṣmaṇa, who stays behind in Ayodhyā during the long exile. Monier-Williams records ūrmilā only as the name of several women in the Mahābhārata and Raghuvaṃśa, without a separate meaning. Name lists give Urmila as "enchantress" or relate it to ūrmi, "wave"; we could not find "enchantress" in the dictionary, and the wave link is a suggestion rather than a recorded etymology. The actress Urmila Matondkar is a well-known bearer.
