Uttam meaning

Uttam (उत्तम) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, उ, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.

Uppermost, highest; best, excellent; name of Dhruva's brother

Uttam (उत्तम) is the Sanskrit uttama, the superlative of ud, "up", so its root sense is "uppermost" or "highest". Monier-Williams gives it as chief, best, excellent, first and greatest. It is also a name in the Purāṇas: Uttama was the half-brother of Dhruva, the boy who became the pole star, and another Uttama was the third Manu. In Hindi and most Indian languages uttam still means "excellent". Name lists give Uttam as "best" or "excellent", which matches. Its most famous bearer is Uttam Kumar, the matinee idol of Bengali cinema.
