Chief of sages; a name of the Buddha, a Jina and Vālmīki
Also used to mean: lord of sages, wise man
Munish (मुनीश) is the Sanskrit munīśa, "chief of the Munis", from muni, "a sage, seer, ascetic", often one who has taken a vow of silence, and īśa, "lord". Monier-Williams notes that it was used as a title of Gautama Buddha and of a Jina, and for Vālmīki, the poet of the Rāmāyaṇa. Name lists give "lord of sages" or "wise man", in line with the dictionary. It is used in North India, where it is also spelt Muneesh and Munesh.
