Vidyasagar meaning
Vidyasagar (विद्यासागर) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin.
'ocean of knowledge': a title of various scholars
Vidyasagar (विद्यासागर) joins Sanskrit vidyā, "knowledge, learning", and sāgara, "ocean". Monier-Williams gives vidyāsāgara as "ocean of knowledge", the name of various scholars, and in practice it was long a title given to a learned person. Its most famous bearer is Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (1820–1891), the Bengali scholar, educator and reformer, who received the title from the Sanskrit College of Calcutta and campaigned for widow remarriage and girls' education. From such titles it became a given name, used especially in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Bengal. Name lists give it as "ocean of knowledge", matching the dictionary.
