Atharv (अथर्व) comes from Sanskrit atharvan, which Monier-Williams gives as a priest who has to do with fire and Soma, and as the name of the priest said to have been the first to institute the worship of fire and offer Soma. The same name gives us the Atharvaveda, the fourth Veda, a collection of hymns and incantations. Indian name lists today often give Atharv as "Lord Ganesha" or "knowledge". Monier-Williams records no Ganesha sense, though it lists Atharvan as a name of Śiva, Vasiṣṭha and Soma. There is also the Gaṇapati Atharvaśīrṣa, a hymn to Ganesha also called the Ganesh Upanishad and chanted at Ganesh Chaturthi, but the dictionaries do not make Atharv itself a name of the god.
