Markandey (मार्कण्डेय) is the name of an ancient sage. Monier-Williams records it as a patronymic, "descendant of Mṛkaṇḍu", borne by the sage held to be the author of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa, which contains the Devī Māhātmya. Name lists usually say "immortal" or "one who conquered death". That sense comes from his story: destined to die at sixteen, the young Mārkaṇḍeya clung to a Shiva linga, and Shiva drove back Yama, the god of death, making him one of the long-lived Chiranjivis. The retired judge Markandey Katju is a well-known bearer.
