Martand meaning
Martand (मार्तंड) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, मा, it is a Simha rashi name (Magha nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The sun, the sun-god
Martand (मार्तंड) is Sanskrit mārtaṇḍa, a name of the sun and the sun-god, and in the plural of the Ādityas, the solar gods. Name lists give "sun", matching Monier-Williams. In Maharashtra the name has a second home: Khandoba, the warrior form of Shiva worshipped at Jejuri, is also called Martand Bhairav, and his devotees greet one another with "Yelkot yelkot, jai Malhar". Elsewhere the word is known from the ruined Martand Sun Temple in Kashmir and from Marthanda Varma, the eighteenth-century founder of the kingdom of Travancore.
In Hindu tradition this is a name of Surya.
