Maran meaning
Maran (மாறன்) is a Tamil boy's name.
A title of the Pāṇḍya kings; also a name of Nammāḻvār
Maran (மாறன்) is an old royal name of the Tamil country. The Tamil Lexicon of the University of Madras gives māṟaṉ first as a Pāṇḍya king, quoting the Sangam anthology Puṟanāṉūṟu, and the Pāṇḍya rulers of Madurai used Māṟaṉ and the related Māṟavarmaṉ as royal names. The Lexicon's second sense is the Vaiṣṇava saint Caṭakōpaṉ, better known as Nammāḻvār, whose Tiruvāymoḻi refers to him as Māṟaṉ. The Lexicon gives no etymology for the royal name, and name lists do not agree on one. In modern Tamil Nadu a well-known bearer is the Union minister Murasoli Maran, who had earlier edited the Tamil daily Murasoli.
