Nambi (நம்பி) is an old Tamil word of honour. The Tamil Lexicon defines nampi as the best among men, used as a respectful title, a perfect soul, and the Supreme Being. It became part of the names of revered teachers: Nambiyandar Nambi gathered the Shaiva hymns into the Tirumurai, and in the Vaishnava tradition Periya Nambi and Tirukkoshtiyur Nambi were teachers of Ramanuja. Today Nambi is used on its own and in compounds such as Nambirajan. A well-known bearer is the aerospace scientist Nambi Narayanan.
