Upamanyu meaning
Upamanyu (उपमन्यु) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, उ, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Zealous, striving after; name of a sage, pupil of Ayoda-Dhaumya
Also used to mean: devoted disciple
Upamanyu (उपमन्यु) is a Vedic Sanskrit word that Monier-Williams gives as "striving after" or "zealous", noting that the commentator Sāyaṇa read it as "intelligent". It is also the name of a sage. In the opening book of the Mahābhārata, Upamanyu is the pupil of Āyoda-Dhaumya whose obedience is tested until he goes blind and is healed by the divine Aśvins, and later texts make him a great devotee of Śiva, who gave him the ocean of milk. Name lists give "devoted disciple" or "zealous", reflecting both the word and the story. The novelist Upamanyu Chatterjee bears the name.
