Ambarish (अम्बरीष) is the Sanskrit ambarīṣa, best known as the name of King Ambarīṣa, son of Nābhāga, whose devotion to Viṣṇu is celebrated in the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, where Viṣṇu's discus protects him from the anger of the sage Durvāsā. Monier-Williams also lists it as a name of the sun and of Viṣṇu, Śiva and Gaṇeśa, and records humbler senses such as a frying pan. Name lists usually give Ambarish as "lord of the sky", reading it as ambara, "sky", plus īśa, "lord". The dictionary spells the word with ṣ and does not give that sense, so it appears to be a modern explanation. Ambrish is a shorter spelling.
In Hindu tradition this is a name of Vishnu.
