Somdev (सोमदेव) is the modern form of Sanskrit Somadeva, from soma, "the moon", and deva, "god". Monier-Williams gives it as the god of the moon, citing the Ramayana, and as the name of Somadeva Bhaṭṭa, the Kashmiri poet of the 11th century who wrote the Kathāsaritsāgara, "ocean of the streams of story", one of the great collections of Indian tales. Name lists give Somdev as "moon god" or "lord of the moon", matching the dictionary. A well-known modern bearer is the tennis player Somdev Devvarman.
