Somil (सोमिल) goes back to Sanskrit Somila, which Monier-Williams records only as a proper name: a poet quoted in Śārṅgadhara's medieval anthology, also called Saumila, and an Asura in the Kathāsaritsāgara. Indian name lists usually give Somil as "moon-like" or "gentle", connecting it with soma, the moon. That is a natural reading of the sound of the name, but the dictionaries do not record it as a meaning, so it appears to be a modern sense rather than the word's documented use. Monier-Williams also lists the related name Saumila for the same poet.
