Veronica is usually traced to the Greek name Berenike, the name of a Herodian princess in Acts, which Strong's Concordance builds from pherō, 'to bring', and nikē, 'victory', and glosses 'victorious'. In the Middle Ages the name was linked instead with Latin vera icon, 'true image', because of the legend of St Veronica, the woman who wiped Jesus' face on the way to Calvary and found his likeness on her veil; that meeting is the sixth Station of the Cross. Many name lists still give 'true image', but that is a folk explanation. In India Veronica is used in Catholic families.
