Catalina is the Spanish form of Catherine. Etymonline traces Catherine to the Greek name Aikaterinē, which reached the West through Latin Ecaterina; what the Greek name originally meant is not known. Name lists give "pure", because the name was long associated with Greek katharos, "pure", and etymonline notes that this folk link is why English Katherine gained its h in the sixteenth century. Much of the name's spread is owed to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, an early martyr. In English, Catalina is also familiar from Santa Catalina Island off California. It is said kat-uh-LEE-nuh.
