Amaya (अमाया) can be read as Sanskrit amāya, a-, "without", plus māyā, "illusion" or "trickery". Monier-Williams gives amāya as free from deceit, guileless, and amāyā as the absence of deceit. On Indian name lists Amaya is often given as "night rain" or "selfless". "Night rain" is the usual reading of the Japanese name Amaya, and Amaya is also a Basque name, so the popular gloss seems to come from those names rather than from Sanskrit. It is a short name that works in many languages.
