Tarangini (तरंगिणी) comes from Sanskrit taraṃga, "a wave". The adjective taraṃgin means "wavy, moving restlessly to and fro", and its feminine taraṃgiṇī, "the one full of waves", is a poetic word for a river. Monier-Williams also lists it as the name of a particular river and as the last word in the titles of several works, the best known being Kalhaṇa's twelfth-century chronicle of Kashmir, the Rājataraṅgiṇī, "river of kings". Name lists give Tarangini as "river" or "flowing water", in line with the dictionary.
