Shipra meaning
Shipra (शिप्रा) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin.
Name of the river near Ujjain (Siprā)
Also used to mean: sacred river, pure
Shipra (शिप्रा) is the name of the river on which the city of Ujjain stands. Monier-Williams records it, under the spelling siprā, as "N. of a river near Ujjayinī", citing Kālidāsa, whose poem Meghadūta describes the breeze off the Siprā, and the astronomer Varāhamihira. The river is also called the Kshipra, and on its banks Ujjain hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The dictionary also gives siprā as a woman's girdle. Name lists give Shipra as "sacred river" or "pure"; the second is a figurative modern sense. The name is used across North India.
