Also used to mean: confluence of three rivers
Triveni (त्रिवेणी) is Sanskrit triveṇī, literally "triple-braided", from tri, "three", and veṇī, "a braid". Monier-Williams gives it as the name of the confluence at Prayāga (Prayagraj), where the Ganges joins the Yamunā and the unseen Sarasvatī is said to meet them underground; the three streams are pictured as strands of one braid. The meeting point, the Triveni Sangam, is the site of the Kumbh Mela. Name lists give Triveni as "confluence of three rivers", in line with the dictionary. The name is used across India.
