Vedavati meaning
Vedavati (वेदवती) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, वे, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Mrigashira nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Versed in the Veda; a river; Kuśadhvaja's daughter, reborn as Sītā
Vedavati (वेदवती) is the feminine of Sanskrit vedavat, "having or familiar with the Veda", from veda, sacred knowledge, and the possessive suffix -vat. Monier-Williams records several bearers. Best known is the beautiful daughter of Kuśadhvaja in the Rāmāyaṇa, who became an ascetic. When Rāvaṇa insulted her during her penance in the forest, she gave up her life by entering the fire and was reborn as Sītā. MW adds that other legends identify her with Draupadī or with Lakṣmī. Vedavatī is also the name of a river in the Mahābhārata and Purāṇas, and of an Apsaras. Indian name lists give the name as one who knows the Vedas, which matches the dictionary.
