Violet meaning
Violet is an international girl's name of English origin (from Latin via French).
The violet flower; Old French violete, from Latin viola
Also used to mean: purple
Violet is the name of the small purple flower, and of the colour named after it. The Online Etymology Dictionary traces it to Old French violete, a diminutive of viole, from Latin viola, which is related to Greek ion, and notes that the colour sense grew from the flower in the late fourteenth century. In English poetry the violet stands for modesty, from the way it hides low among leaves. Viola, the Latin form, is also a name and was given by Shakespeare to the heroine of Twelfth Night. Violet is said VY-uh-lit, and Indian parents may like that it is a flower name like Neelima or Kusum.
