Zubair (زبیر) is the Arabic Zubayr, a classical name with the diminutive pattern fuʿayl. On name lists today it is usually given as "strong" or "firm". Lane's Lexicon has no entry for zubayr, and no source we checked says which word the name was built on, so we give no dictionary meaning. Lane does record words from the same root, z-b-r: zabr, "stones", and also "understanding, self-restraint", and zubra, "a piece of iron", whose plural appears in the Quran at 18:96. The name is honoured through al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, a prominent companion of the Prophet, who was killed in 656 at the Battle of the Camel near Basra. The town of al-Zubayr in Iraq preserves the remains of a mosque dedicated to him.
