Aabhas (आभास) comes from Sanskrit ābhāsa, built on the verb bhās, "to shine". Monier-Williams gives its first senses as splendour and light, then colour, appearance and a reflection. The same word can also mean a mere semblance or a phantom, and logicians used it for an argument that only looks sound. Baby-name lists today usually give Aabhas as "awareness" or "feeling", which follows the everyday Hindi use of ābhās for a sense or an inkling of something. That sense is not in the Sanskrit dictionary, so we show the older meaning, light and splendour, alongside it.
