Adhrit (अधृत) is the Sanskrit adhṛta, from a-, "not", and dhṛta, "held", from the verb dhṛ, "to hold, to support". Monier-Williams gives the adjective as not held, unrestrained or uncontrolled, and lists Adhṛta as a name of Viṣṇu, the god who is held up by nothing. Name lists today usually give Adhrit as "firm", "steady" or "one who supports everyone but needs no support". The first two are not dictionary senses and run against the literal meaning, while the last is a reading of the Vishnu name. The spelling Aadhrit would come from a different word, ādhṛta, "supported".
In Hindu tradition this is a name of Vishnu.
