Amrita meaning
Amrita (अमृता) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, अ, it is a Mesh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Immortal; the nectar of immortality
Amrita (अमृता) comes from Sanskrit amṛta, a-, "not", with mṛta, "dead". Monier-Williams gives it as immortal and imperishable, and as the nectar that rose from the churning of the ocean and made the gods deathless. The feminine amṛtā also names sacred plants such as tulsi and amla. Name lists give "nectar" or "immortal", as in the dictionary. Well-known bearers include the painter Amrita Sher-Gil and the Punjabi poet Amrita Pritam. Amruta is the Marathi spelling, and Amrit the boys' and Sikh form.
