Amrapali meaning
Amrapali (आम्रपाली) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit and Pali origin.
Name of a woman; the Vaishali courtesan who followed the Buddha
Also used to mean: guardian of the mango grove
Amrapali (आम्रपाली) is the Sanskrit form of Ambapālī, the celebrated royal courtesan of the Vaiśālī republic in Bihar around 500 BCE. Monier-Williams records Āmrapālī as the name of a woman. The name begins with āmra, "mango": tradition says she was found at the foot of a mango tree in the royal gardens. Buddhist texts tell how she hosted the Buddha, gave her mango grove to his order, and later became a nun. Name lists render it as "guardian of the mango grove". Her story has inspired novels, films and television serials.
