The Tamil Lexicon defines it as water falling from a hill, and also gives a river mouth, water in general and a spring at the foot of a hill; its supplement adds a river and a hill. The word is familiar from place names such as Courtallam's Aintharuvi, the "five falls". Aruvi is also the title of the acclaimed 2017 Tamil film named after its heroine. Name lists give "waterfall", exactly the dictionary sense.
