Vaigai meaning
Vaigai (வைகை) is a Tamil girl's name.
The Vaigai, the river of Madurai
Vaigai (வைகை) is the river that flows through Madurai, the ancient Pandya capital, and gives the city its Sangam-age setting. The Tamil Lexicon records the older form vaiyai, quoting the Puṟanāṉūṟu, and derives vaikai from Sanskrit Vegavatī, the river name Monier-Williams glosses as 'swift' or 'impetuous'; Sanskrit texts do call the river Vegavati. Sangam poems such as the Paripāṭal sing of festivals on its banks. Tamil families who choose river names for daughters, like Kaveri or Ponni, pick Vaigai for its Madurai associations.
