Thamarai (தாமரை) is the everyday Tamil word for the lotus, Nelumbium speciosum. The Tamil Lexicon traces tāmarai to Sanskrit tāmarasa, another word for the lotus, so the name has roots in both languages. Besides the flower, the Lexicon records a lotus-shaped battle array. The lotus is one of the most familiar images of beauty in Tamil poetry and in Hindu art, and Tamil name lists give the name simply as "lotus", the same as the dictionary.
