Monier-Williams gives lakṣmī as a sign or token, good fortune, prosperity, beauty and grace, and the goddess herself, the consort of Vishnu; the Tamil Lexicon records ilakkumi in the same sense. The first part, Subbu, is a Tamil family element, generally understood as a short form of Subrahmanya, a name of Murugan, though we could not confirm this in a dictionary. Name lists often give 'auspicious Lakshmi'. The name is inseparable from M. S. Subbulakshmi, the Carnatic singer and first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna.
